With a height of 89 cm, a width of approximately 75 cm, and a weight of about 60–70 kg, the sculpture has an impressive physical presence. The dark patina, developed further over the years, gives the bronze a serene appearance that is particularly well showcased in both an interior and a Japanese garden, meditation room, or other serene environment. Amida Buddha and the Mida no Jōin mudra The Buddha sits in deep meditation with both hands before the body in the characteristic Mida no Jōin. This Japanese meditation mudra is specifically associated with Amida Buddha, known in Sanskrit as Amitābha. Within Japanese Buddhism, Amida is central to the Pure Land traditions. His serene posture and meditative hand gesture refer to inner peace, concentration, and the pursuit of enlightenment. Japanese Kamakura Aesthetic Stylistically, the sculpture harks back to the powerful imagery made famous by the large Japanese Buddha statues of the Kamakura tradition. This is evident in the broad, understated face, the half-closed eyes, the elaborately worked hair curls, and the heavy folds of the monastic robe. Especially from a slight side angle, the sculpture takes on an almost architectural appearance. The broad shoulders, large lotus position, and deeply worked robe folds give the sculpture significant volume despite its calm posture. Heavily Cast Bronze With an estimated weight of 60–70 kg, this is an exceptionally heavily cast bronze sculpture. Its scale and mass clearly distinguish it from the much lighter decorative Buddha statues currently produced for the international interior and garden market. The surface has a nuanced dark brown to olive-colored patina. The sculpture stood outdoors in a Dutch private garden for approximately 28 years, allowing its surface to naturally mature and weather further. Provenance since 1998 The sculpture was purchased in 1998 from Kwan Yin Import B.V. in The Hague for 3,525 Dutch guilders. The original purchase receipt was present with the sculpture but is unfortunately no longer available. This long-standing Dutch provenance gives the sculpture an interesting additional story: it was already a valuable and imposing object in the late 1990s and has since formed part of the same private garden environment for many years. For interior, garden, and meditation space Due to its size, this is not a small decorative Buddha statue, but a sculpture that truly defines a space. In a grand hall, a minimalist interior, yoga studio, meditation room, or amidst natural stone and greenery in a garden, it immediately creates a powerful yet tranquil focal point. A particularly large Japanese bronze Amida sculpture where scale, weight, serene iconography, and decades of natural surface development converge.
