Product description
Vintage 1970s modular pine set of six. This set of six low lounge chairs originates from a monastic context and embodies a design style that has become rare today: radically functional, constructively honest, and aesthetically unadorned. The chairs are crafted from solid pine, constructed according to traditional principles, with visible mortise and tenon joints and a logical, legible construction. Nothing is hidden or cosmetically solved here: the construction is the design. Comfort arises from proportion, tranquility, and materials. Stylistically, the chairs align with a brutalist and monastic design tradition, as re-embraced in the 1970s and 1980s, with austerity as a quality, repetition and modularity as the starting point, and craftsmanship over decoration. They are related to movements in which architecture, interior design, and furniture were conceived as a single entity, with influences from rustic modernism and early wabi-sabi. The set is modular: the chairs can be placed individually, but also in rows, corners, or groups. This repeatability gives them a strong spatial effect, making them suitable for both private interiors and project-based applications such as galleries, studios, waiting areas, or conceptual hospitality settings. Each chair measures approximately 65 cm wide, 74 cm deep, and 59 cm high, with a low seat height of approximately 29.5 cm at the front and 24.5 cm at the back, creating a relaxed lounge feel and calming, horizontal lines in the space. Original, structurally sound, and with a refined patina commensurate with age and use. For those who value honest materials, tranquility in form, and an interior that allows space for architecture. In their simple materiality and constructive clarity, these chairs are stylistically related to the architectural thinking of Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé, with echoes of Pierre Chapo, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Dom Hans van der Laan and the early, rational furniture idiom of Gerrit Rietveld.
