Digoin and Sarreguemines. Two names that resonate in the history of French earthenware. The Sarreguemines factory, founded in 1790 in Moselle, acquired the Digoin factory in Saône-et-Loire in 1875: together, they produced some of the most beautiful French earthenware of the 20th century. These 5 plates belong to the "Les Mois" (The Months) collection, one of the factory's most sought-after narrative decors, where each month of the year is illustrated by a genre scene engraved with black transferware on an ivory white background. Each plate tells a story. April: two children in the garden, an overturned basket, chicks escaping. March: a couple huddled under an umbrella facing the rain, a church in the background. June: a summery, festive scene, figures reclining under trees. February: silhouettes in the wind, bare branches bending. May: an open-air dance, the joy of rediscovered spring. The rim of each plate is adorned with a molded, embossed braided basketry design, with a black line on the edge. The delicacy of the transferware, the quality of the earthenware, the precision of the scenes: everything here testifies to the exceptional craftsmanship of Digoin-Sarreguemines. Diameter approximately 23 cm. The 5 plates are intact, the decors crisp and vibrant. Displayed in a china cabinet, they form an earthenware almanac one never tires of looking at.
