The lamp is completely matte black
The top vertical piece is to put your cell phone against and thus e.g. to use as a clock / alarm clock.
There is also a charging port for the cell phone, but this is unfortunately outdated or perhaps with a conversion cable to use.
The lamp is also very suitable as a nightstand lamp.
