Product description
Rare set of two Gispen Diagonaalstoelen. Willem Hendrik Gispen designed the famous Diagonaalstoel in 1927. In that year, a first prototype of the chair was introduced at an exhibition of 'Artless Utensils' in Rotterdam. Series production of the Gispen Diagonaalstoel then began around 1929, after which the chair was also used in the interior design of the Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam and the Raadhuis van Hilversum.
The most characteristic element of the Gispen Diagonaalstoel is the steel tubular frame that forms a striking X-shape or diagonal cross on the sides. Instead of the traditional four vertical legs, Willem Hendrik Gispen designed a construction where the back leg runs diagonally forward and the front leg runs diagonally backward.
Condition
The chairs are in good vintage condition. The steel frames and the seats/backrests show signs of wear consistent with the age of the objects. See the detailed photos for an accurate impression of the current condition.
