In the past, the table napkin did not disappear after each meal. In homes, everyone kept their own for subsequent meals, carefully folded and slipped into a personal napkin holder. These two linen pieces bear witness to this way of setting the table and maintaining the home, a practice now almost forgotten. Crafted from beautiful unbleached linen fabric, these napkin holders display the slightly irregular texture characteristic of antique linen. Their great simplicity is their main charm. No superfluous decoration, but meticulous craftsmanship, with narrow hems and regular stitching. Their elongated format, approximately 28 x 12 cm each, allowed a folded table napkin to be placed inside before the textile was closed around it. The material, craftsmanship, and finishes allow them to be dated to the first half of the 20th century, around the years , a period during which this type of linen was still naturally part of the daily organization of family tables. Preserved together, they form a beautiful pair, interesting both for completing a set of antique household linen and for rediscovering this forgotten use today. They can also accommodate old embroidered or monogrammed napkins and bring to a contemporary table that elegant simplicity characteristic of linen from yesteryear.
