Product description
There was a time when even the first coffee of the morning deserved the finest porcelain. This elegant pair of Limoges porcelain bowls belongs to that almost forgotten world of beautiful French tables, when even everyday tableware could feature gold decoration. Their silhouette is particularly exquisite. A widely open bowl, supported by a circular foot, with a discreetly ribbed wall that adds movement to the porcelain's whiteness. But it's their rim that gives them their full personality. A deep, wine-red burgundy ribbon runs around each bowl, highlighted with gold and accompanied by a delicate gilded geometric frieze. The contrast is superb. The luminous white of the porcelain, the depth of the burgundy, and the warmer glints of the gilding create a design that is both classic and very elegant. On the reverse, simply, in gold letters, appears "Limoges France". This mark takes us back to one of the great French stories of tableware. Since the discovery of kaolin in Limousin in the 18th century, Limoges has become one of Europe's leading centers for hard-paste porcelain. Over generations, factories and decoration workshops there have produced grand ceremonial dinner services as well as these pieces intended for elegant family tables. By their shape and decoration, these two bowls date to around the 1950s, a period when French manufacturers still perpetuated traditional table codes while progressively simplifying lines. They have passed through several decades and naturally bear some traces of their past. The gilding shows a slight patina in places, and small signs of use are visible. Nothing that detracts from their charm, quite the opposite. They remind us that this is indeed antique porcelain, not a contemporary re-edition. Reunited today, the two form a very pretty pair, elegant enough to be collected and charming enough to reclaim its place on a table. Two Limoges bowls, a touch of gold, a beautiful burgundy, and that French elegance that once knew how to begin right from breakfast.
