Pair of bookends in bronze-plated spelter representing two stags in the round, on cream beige marble bases. Art Deco animalier style, French or Italian production from the 1920s-1940s. Each stag is depicted standing, in an alert posture, head held high. The antlers are finely modeled, with six branched tines. The body is stocky and muscular, the legs slender and well-proportioned. The ground of each figurine imitates natural undergrowth, with foliage and branches in relief. The patina is dark brown with golden highlights on the raised areas, characteristic of interwar bronze-plated spelter. The two stags face each other, mirror-imaged, as is classic for bookends. The bases are made of cream beige marble, rectangular in shape with slightly blunted corners. Dimensions of each element: base approximately 14 x 10 cm, total height approximately 15 cm. No visible signature. Very good condition, homogeneous patina, clean bases with slight signs of wear. Note, one of the stags has a slight looseness on its base, easily tightened. Interwar animalier sculpture, in the tradition of the great French bronziers of the 19th century, produced numerous spelter editions for the bourgeois market. Deer bookends on marble bases are among the most sought-after models, both for their artistic quality and their decorative utility. In a library, an office, a hunting or nature-themed interior, or an Art Deco decoration, they naturally find their place. Circa .
