A very beautiful pair of antique dessert plates from the Badonviller factory in Lorraine, whose decoration immediately immerses us in the botanical world of Art Nouveau. Against an ivory background, subtly patinated by time, large stylized thistles unfurl, rendered in a remarkable monochrome of greens. The stems extend freely across the surface, while the flowers and foliage almost seem to move with the plate's motion. The design is particularly successful due to its asymmetry, very characteristic of this period when artists progressively abandoned the strict order of traditional decorations to introduce the supple and irregular lines of nature into decorative arts. The plate's rim fully contributes to this aesthetic. Its undulating edge features large wave-like reliefs that complement the botanical decoration. A discreet gilded line, now patinated and partially faded, further highlights the contour. We are here in Lorraine, an essential region in the history of French Art Nouveau. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, wild flowers, thistles, foliage, insects, and Lorraine landscapes became a true decorative repertoire, particularly associated with the tremendous artistic momentum developed around Nancy. The Badonviller factory participated in this history of Lorraine tableware by adapting new decorative sensibilities to a production intended for the interiors of the time. The thistle is, moreover, a particularly evocative motif in Lorraine. Its graphic silhouette, its cut-out leaves, and its bristly flowers lend themselves admirably to Art Nouveau's ornamental explorations. Both plates bear the old F. BADONVILLER stamp on the reverse. Diameter approximately 21 cm. The set exhibits a beautiful antique patina with natural crazing of the enamel and wear to the peripheral gilding. One of the two plates has an old chip on the edge, perfectly visible in our photographs. More than a century after their creation, their large thistles retain that astonishing modernity characteristic of the most beautiful Art Nouveau botanical designs.
