Summer 1969. Aboard a cruise ship organized by the women's magazine Libelle, the group gathers around the swimming pool on deck. The deck chairs are arranged in neat rows under striped parasols, the men in swimming trunks, the women in swimsuits and shower caps, while below in the pool, a small group cools off under a radiant sky. It is a scene of post-war prosperity and leisure: the Dutch middle class traveling en masse for the first time, by boat, with the camera right in the middle of it. Hilterman captures the scene without staging — a spontaneous snapshot of a generation that had just learned to travel for pleasure.
