Truly a masterpiece!
Offered at auction: a beautiful and rare Orientalist oil painting from the mid-19th century. This work, executed on a canvas with a characteristic arched top, is attributed to the renowned French painter Henry Scheffer.
The painting depicts an 'Islamic Poetess'. The refined, almost porcelain-like skin tones and the dreamy, melancholic gaze are characteristic of the 'Pietist' style of the Scheffer brothers. Particularly noteworthy about this work is the intellectual subject matter: the muse is depicted with a quill and inkwell, a tribute to the literary traditions of the East that were highly favored during the Romantic era.
