Markings on the reverse:
The Sphinx Logo: The image of a recumbent sphinx was adopted as the official corporate logo in 1879."Petrus Regout & Co / MAASTRICHT": Indicates the plate was made at the famous De Sphinx pottery works in Maastricht, Netherlands."TIMOR": This designates the highly collectible Oriental chinoiserie transfer-print pattern on the front side of the plate."MADE IN HOLLAND": The inclusion of this exact phrase provides a crucial clue for dating. In accordance with global export regulations (such as the US McKinley Tariff Act), the factory added "Made in Holland" to this specific sphinx backstamp style starting in 1883. Because the factory was completely restructured and renamed simply "De Sphinx" in 1899, this exact ink stamp dates the plate to between 1883 and 1899.
