Product description
Large gilded pulegoso Murano glass vase, made in the 1950s, 30 cm diameter, 43 cm height. Pulegoso glass is a particular and distinctive blown glass technique, especially typical of the Murano furnaces in Venice, which experienced its greatest splendor during the Art Deco period and in the subsequent years. The term "pulegoso" derives from Venetian and refers to the bubbly, iridescent, and opaque appearance that characterizes this type of glass. The pulegoso effect is intentionally achieved by introducing small air bubbles into the glass mass during the melting or blowing process. This is done by adding volatile substances or granules that release gas to the glass mixture (or by inserting them during processing), creating a myriad of micro-bubbles of air (the 'puleghe') that cannot completely escape. The trapped bubbles make the glass opaque or semi-opaque and give it a tactile, granular, and velvety appearance. The surface is not perfectly smooth, but appears uneven and reflects light diffusely, creating an almost sparkling effect.
