Product description
1930s Art Deco Convertible Sleeper Armchair with Curved Beech Wood Frame, Czechoslovakia
An exceptional Art Deco convertible armchair from 1930s Czechoslovakia, featuring an elegant curved beech wood frame, newly upholstered cushions, and an ingenious integrated pull-out sleeping mechanism.
This distinctive piece of European interwar furniture combines sculptural elegance with practical functionality, reflecting the innovative approach to furniture design that emerged during the Art Deco and early modernist periods.
The chair is distinguished by its beautifully curved wooden armrests, which form a graceful architectural silhouette and emphasize the craftsmanship of its solid beech wood construction.
The dark-stained wooden frame contrasts elegantly with the newly upholstered cushions, finished in a richly textured striped fabric combining burgundy, cream, and charcoal tones.
One of the most remarkable features of this armchair is its original convertible construction.
Through an integrated pull-out mechanism, the chair transforms into a single sleeper bed, extending to an overall sleeping length of approximately 197 cm (77.6 inches).
The mechanism incorporates a sliding wooden structure, original metal fittings, and a supporting frame designed to accommodate the extended upholstered sleeping surface.
This multifunctional design illustrates the ingenuity of European furniture makers during the interwar period, when craftsmanship, comfort, and efficient use of space became increasingly important elements of modern domestic interiors.
