18th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Black Lacquer Altar Table, China, 1700s. Ref. DT2000
A substantial Chinese altar table from the Qing Dynasty, dating to the 18th century and traditionally associated with northern China. Crafted from elm, or jumu, the table retains its original deep black lacquer, now beautifully aged and extensively craquelled through centuries of use.
The exceptionally strong, architectural form is characteristic of traditional Chinese furniture of the period. The rectangular top is framed in solid wood and fitted with three large dark stone panels, giving the table considerable weight and an unusual tactile quality. The contrast between the dark stone and the heavily weathered black lacquer creates a particularly striking surface.
The construction displays traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, with elegantly curved hand-shaped supports beneath the top. The slightly tapered legs terminate in distinctive shaped feet, while the restrained proportions give the table the unmistakable character of a classical Chinese altar table.
With its generous proportions of approximately 200 cm wide, 100 cm deep and 78 cm high, the table is equally compelling as a large dining table, centre table or statement piece in a contemporary interior, while retaining the character and proportions of its original altar-table form.
The surface has developed a rich and highly authentic patina, with extensive areas of lacquer loss, craquelure, rubbing and wear revealing the warm reddish-brown wood beneath. These marks are an integral part of the table’s history and are visible throughout the piece, including the legs, apron and edges.
A rare and imposing example of early Chinese furniture, combining substantial construction, aged black lacquer, inset stone and an exceptionally expressive surface patina.
