Product description
This eighteenth-century Spanish colonial statue depicts a male figure with an expressive face and a detailed beard, likely Saint Paul. The sculpture is a striking example of the Estofado technique for religious or devotional art from this period, characterized by the rich, layered finish and the flowing drapery of the robe.
The statue is crafted from wood and features a polychrome and gilded finish, a technique typical of colonial sculpture. The gold-colored cloak displays a deep texture that emphasizes the drapery, while the face is painted with subtle colors to create a lifelike expression. The figure stands on a simple, dark base.
The object is in a condition befitting its considerable age, with an authentic patina that underscores its historical value. The original finish has been largely preserved, although the ravages of time are visible in the surface texture. Both hands are missing, which is a common feature of antique wooden statues of this age.
This historic sculpture makes an intriguing centerpiece for a classical or eclectic interior. The object comes into its own particularly well on a console or in a display cabinet, where it adds an atmosphere of understated devotion and historical richness to the room.
