Beautiful vintage ‘Grasshopper’ floor lamp from the 1950s in typical Dutch design. The model shows clear similarities to the famous ‘Grasshopper’ by Willem van Doorn, but is not by his hand. This version was presumably produced by Philips.
This lamp emerged during a period when Dutch design was strongly influenced by post-war modernism. Heavy and decorative designs gradually gave way to light, functional objects, with ease of use, clear forms, and honest materials at the forefront. This floor lamp is a striking example of that.
The design is characterized by the slender metal stand and the distinctive tripod, which gives the lamp an airy and insect-like appearance. A detail typical of Dutch design from the 1950s. Despite the minimalist construction, the whole looks surprisingly stable and elegant.
The wide, saucer-shaped shade forms a beautiful contrast with the slender frame. The fine perforations along the edge add extra charm to the design and create a subtle light effect when the lamp is lit. The pastel yellow color creates a soft appearance, while the small red detail at the top adds a playful accent to the otherwise understated whole.
With its airy construction, clean lines, and balanced proportions, this floor lamp is a beautiful example of post-war Dutch design. A design that still looks modern and surprisingly contemporary more than seventy years later. The lamp is in neat vintage condition with light signs of use appropriate for its age.
