Product description
Rare Mid-Century Brutalist Floor light – Walnut, Brass & Solid Leather Shade – Attributed to Studio Wohnraumleuchten – Germany, approx. 1970
Description:
An absolute masterpiece of Mid-Century craftsmanship. This impressive and heavy Floor light (approx. 1970) combines raw, high-quality materials with the finest cabinetmaking. The lamp is in beautiful vintage condition and exudes pure luxury. A rare object for discerning collectors of high-end design from Europe.
The Shade: Handcrafted natural leather from one piece
The absolute showpiece of this lamp is the monumental, conical lampshade. Unlike the mass-produced goods common at the time (which usually used plastic, pleats, or cords), this shade is made entirely of thick, solid natural leather/parchment. The beautiful, tactile natural grain is absolutely genuine and not a print.
Unique to this design is that the shade is also completely closed and covered at the top. This creates a wonderfully soft, indirect ambient light towards the ceiling, without looking directly into the light sources. The lower edge is masterfully adorned with two-tone, classic fabric fringes (tassels).
Column & Base: Exclusive Cabinetmaking Quality
The base of the lamp testifies to uncompromising craftsmanship. The column and the round base are made of warm, dark walnut wood, elegantly interrupted by 4 precisely inlaid, vertical gold brass strips.
The underside of the base immediately reveals its exclusive origin: the heavy cast iron counterweight is not covered with cheap plastic, but is recessed into a solid walnut ring.
The upper tube can be adjusted or disassembled using heavy brass threaded rods and conical adjusting nuts.
Electrics & Test Marks: Guaranteed Quality
The lamp is equipped with a double E27 brass socket. On the sockets are the historical, authentic stamps that guarantee age and quality:
• The JG monogram: The elegantly embossed, intertwined logo of the renowned German quality manufacturer J.G. Brückmann (Westphalia).
• 2/250: The historical European standard for maximum load (2A / 250V).
• SE in a rhombus: The renowned Swedish SEMKO safety mark, which at the time was only awarded to electrical components from the absolute top segment.
Why attributed to Studio Wohnraumleuchten?
Although the lamp (as is common in this exclusive segment) no longer bears a paper label, the object can be attributed with absolute certainty to the high-end atelier Studio Wohnraumleuchten from Germany.
The sum of the features leaves no doubt: this small West German atelier was known in the 1960s and 1970s for not delivering mass-produced goods, but for manufacturing exclusive salon lighting for upscale living spaces. Their absolute signature was the use of heavy, fully closed natural leather shades at the top, combined with masterful walnut and brass inlays. The presence of premium components from Brückmann (JG) confirms the artisanal origin from West Germany.
Condition:
The lamp is in beautiful, authentic vintage condition with a very attractive patina on brass and wood. The leather shade is intact, supple, and shows the wonderful, lived-in characteristics typical of a natural product over 50 years old. Fully functionally tested.
