Product description
Stunning Soviet spa cup made of enameled ceramic, produced in the 1970s-1980s. Known as a biuvetnitsa, it was intended for drinking mineral waters in the spa resorts of the former USSR. Its large, hollow handle connects directly to the vessel and extends into a spout. This allowed the spa-goer to slowly drink the mineral water through this conduit while moving through the spa galleries and pavilions. Spa treatments held an important place in Soviet health and social culture. Kislovodsk, Essentuki, Pyatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk, Truskavets, and Borjomi welcomed numerous spa-goers, who were accompanied daily by these uniquely shaped cups. The beige enameled ceramic features warm hues. A generous stylized floral decoration unfolds on both sides in a palette of grey-blue, ochre, brown, and orange touches, characteristic of 1970s decorative arts. The slightly curved rectangular body, the oblong opening, and the sculptural handle create an immediately recognizable shape. Light glides over the shiny enamel and gently highlights the painted decoration's relief. An old black-blue circular stamp remains visible under the base. Partially faded, it confirms Soviet manufacturing without allowing the manufacturer to be identified with certainty. The cup measures approximately 12 cm in height and 9 cm in width. Its opening measures approximately 6 by 3 cm. This unique piece preserves the memory of an important spa tradition. It brings together the history of daily life, Soviet popular design, and the delicate charm of a ceramic piece that has become rare.
