Private sellerProduct description
This is an authentic sextant from the German manufacturer Freiberger Präzisionsmechanik, an instrument that was essential for astronavigation. The object is a tangible piece of maritime history, designed for measuring the angle between a celestial body and the horizon.
This sextant is made of metal with a light grey, matte finish and features various glass lenses and mirrors. The instrument bears the manufacturer's stamp, Freiberger Präzisionsmechanik, along with the serial number 783283. The 'DSRK' marking likely refers to Deutsche Seereederei Rostock, the state shipping company of the former GDR, placing the instrument in the Mid-Century period. The precision engineering characteristic of the brand is visible in the graduated arc and the fine mechanical components.
The overall condition is good, consistent with the age and functional past of the instrument. The sextant has a characteristic patina that testifies to its use at sea. The traces of a life as a navigation instrument contribute to the authentic appearance and story of the object.
As a Decorative Objects, this sextant is an intriguing addition to a study, office, or an interior with an industrial or maritime theme. It is an excellent collector's item for lovers of scientific instruments and nautical antiquities.
