The two sculptures consciously form a single ensemble and belong to a recognizable Javanese tradition in which a married couple is depicted as a symbolic unit. The elongated figures are made of painted wood and are estimated to date from around 1930. With heights of 102.5 and 99 cm, they have a distinct presence, while their slender proportions are characteristic of this type of Javanese sculpture. Loro Blonyo in Javanese culture Loro Blonyo literally means a pair or two that belong together. The male and female figures are traditionally arranged as a pair and are associated with marriage, harmony, fertility, prosperity, and well-being within the household. The tradition has its roots in the court culture of Java and remained strongly present in private interiors even in the first half of the 20th century.
