Murano - Glass sceptre - Murano, Italy - 2nd half of the 20th century
A spectacular piece of Venetian glassmaking: a ruby red sphere decorated with applied flower prunts and clear spiked finials, set on a clear handle with leaf-shaped collar, a row of applied glass beads, a ribbed ring and a twisted (ritorti) shaft. Unsigned and unlabelled – similar sceptres are sometimes attributed on the market to Elio Raffaeli, but the maker of this piece is not confirmed. A striking decorative object with a strong sculptural presence.
Colours: ruby red, clear
Dimensions: length 47 cm, diameter of the head 15 cm, weight 1.4 kg
Condition: good vintage condition. The sceptre rests on its spiked finials; on 2 of the 14 clear spikes only the very tip is broken off – the flower-shaped bases are intact, and because the glass is clear the loss is hardly visible (see detail photos). No other damage.
Material and technique: hand blown Murano glass, applied hot-worked decoration (prunts, leaves, beads), twisted handle
