Product description
TITLE:
Rare Modernist Wooden Crucifix (13x10 cm) – Brutalist / Art Deco – Monogrammed and Attributed to Gijs Jacobs van den Hof (1889-1965)
DESCRIPTION:
Offered for sale: an exceptionally characterful and rare wooden house crucifix by the renowned master sculptor and woodcarver Gijs Jacobs van den Hof (1889–1965). This object is a beautiful and intimate example of early modernist religious studio art from the period 1930-1950 and fits perfectly into a high-end modernist or eclectic interior.
UNIQUE STYLE CHARACTERISTICS:
The corpus of Christ is hand-carved from a solid block of hardwood and testifies to the artist's typical, powerful craftsmanship. The design completely breaks with traditional Neo-Gothic:
- The face is very characteristic and minimally stylized with a sleek, geometric 'pageboy' or bob-cut hairstyle, the trademark of Jacobs van den Hof in his portraits from Art Deco and early Expressionism.
- The angular, Brutalism-like planes in the bridge of the nose, deep-set eye sockets, and taut limbs allow the raw soul and grain of the wood to speak.
SIGNATURE & ARTIST:
On the underside of the back, there is the official, carefully incised artist's monogram in ligature: 'GJ'. This specific mark is officially registered in the archive of the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) as the signature of Gijs Jacobs van den Hof. Jacobs van den Hof began his career as a skilled furniture maker and woodcarver, which is perfectly expressed in this refined yet robust small-scale carving.
