This large box takes us directly back to French kitchens of the 1970s, when copperware, pottery, and stone walls were making a comeback in interiors. Its decoration is almost a scene in itself, with hanging pots and strainers, a pitcher, a teapot, vegetables, and foliage arranged on the shelves of a dream country kitchen. Massilly was founded in Burgundy in 1911, a few kilometers from Cluny. Its founder, Robert Bindschedler, established his business in an old mill that once belonged to the Abbey of Cluny. After World War I, the company turned to metal transformation and the manufacturing of household items, then developed its expertise in tinplate printing and metal packaging. Our box belongs to a particularly charming period of this history. Its design places it around the 1970s, probably between the late 1960s and mid-1970s. Rustic decor was everywhere back then, and this accumulation of copper, ceramic, and traditional objects wonderfully tells the story of that trend. Its dimensions, approximately 26 × 18 cm, make it a generously sized box that can perfectly be put back into service. On a kitchen shelf with a few stoneware pots, on an antique sideboard, or amidst a more contemporary decor, it immediately brings a warm seventies touch. It can also return to its original function and hold biscuits, tea bags, mail, photographs, or small household items. The exterior retains a colorful and very prominent decor. The gilded interior and the underside are heavily scratched and show numerous signs of use, perfectly visible in the photographs. Its price reflects this. Dimensions approximately 26 × 18 cm. 1970s.
