Sarreguemines, with its Corot design, chooses to evoke the world of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, one of the great French landscape masters of the 19th century. A painter of undergrowth, ponds, paths, and countryside bathed in soft light, Corot imposed a vision of nature imbued with silence and poetry that would leave a lasting mark on the decorative arts of his time. At the end of the 19th century, this enthusiasm for landscape spread to faience manufacturers. The table was no longer content to be merely functional. It became a true decorative setting, where rural scenes, distant architecture, birds, and vegetation, in turn, told a story. Sarreguemines' Corot model fully embodies this spirit. At the center of this large platter, a dwelling can be glimpsed behind tall trees, while the landscape gently recedes towards the horizon. The monochrome print, in a delicate old rose hue, imbues the scene with that peaceful and slightly ethereal atmosphere immediately reminiscent of the painter's world. All around, the decoration becomes lighter and almost bucolic. Bouquets of roses punctuate the rim, while small birds cross the composition, some carrying a flowering branch in their beaks. A wine-red band follows the platter's undulating contour, delicately accentuating the whole. Measuring 34 × 25 cm, the piece boasts the beautiful proportions of large serving platters intended for bourgeois tables. Displayed in a china cabinet, on a console table, or among a collection of antique faience, it readily takes on the appearance of a small painting. The reverse bears the "Sarreguemines France" mark accompanied by the name "Corot." Its enamel displays a fine network of crazing acquired over time, while the border trim naturally shows some marks of its age, visible in the photographs. A beautiful testament to an era when major French faience manufacturers brought much more than just a simple decoration to the table: a landscape, an atmosphere, and a little of the imagination of the great painters of the 19th century.
