Glazed stoneware vase by Jean Cacheleux — Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye.
Superb stoneware vase signed by Jean Cacheleux, a ceramist based in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye since 1974 and awarded the title of Best Craftsman of France in 2000.
This piece takes on a curved and asymmetrical shape, with a taut profile reminiscent of a pebble or a shell, typical of the artist's formal exploration. The irregular opening, sculpted inwards, reveals a deep, intense black interior that contrasts with the richness of the brown-red exterior glaze, marked by copper streaks and golden hues reminiscent of the reflections of flame-fired stoneware.
The interplay of materials and colours — deep black, oxblood brown, golden flecks — perfectly illustrates Cacheleux's aesthetic of contrasts, blending the pottery tradition of Puisaye with contemporary sensibility.
