Private sellerProduct description
This is a fine enamel on copper artwork by the French artist Georges Papault, a Maître Émailleur from Limoges. The piece presents a captivating miniature portrait, notable for its rich colour and the historical significance of its Limoges origin, a city renowned for its enamel craftsmanship since the Middle Ages.
The artwork is an 'émail sur cuivre', created using the traditional 'grand feu' or high-firing technique, as stated on the original label affixed to the reverse. This entirely handmade piece showcases a striking profile of a woman in a vibrant red hood, set against a deep black background. The composition is housed in its original gold-toned frame, which features a distinctive textured finish that complements the glossy surface of the enamel.
The enamel itself has been well-preserved, retaining its original lustre and the intensity of its colours. The piece presents with a character that reflects its history, showing signs of age that do not detract from the central portrait's artistic quality. The presence of the artist's original label provides important provenance and confirms the method of its creation.
As a small-scale work, this framed enamel portrait is perfectly suited for display in an intimate setting, such as on a bookshelf, a side table, or as part of a larger gallery wall. It would bring a touch of classic French artistry and refined detail to a variety of interior styles, from traditional to eclectic.
