Encaustic (wax and pigments) painting, by the Berlin artist Gabriele Styppa, with Frames from 2021, 60 x 60 cm. From Greek-Roman antiquity to Byzantine icon painting and up to the 7th century, the encaustic painting technique was very widespread, until it was then supplanted by tempera painting and only re-thinking the use of electrical devices that made it easier to melt wax. Artists such as Jackson Pollock and Jasper Johns then experimented with wax and helped the medium gain new popularity, especially in America. The unique luminosity of the colors, the possibility of transparency, surface design, collage and the excellent preservation properties are everything Characteristics of encaustic. The artist has been working with this technique since 2021, bringing the materiality of color into the third dimension.
