Early work by Oskar Lens, the daily grind of life with images of everyday items, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1968, dimensions 110cm x 92cm
Oskar Lens (1930-2017) was born in Hilversum and grew up in the Gooi region. After graduating from the Nieuwe Lyceum, he completed his law studies in Utrecht. On the advice of painters such as Jaap Nanninga, Theo Bitter, and others, he attended the Vrije Academie (Free Academy) in the evenings. At 33, he decided to quit his job to devote himself entirely to painting. Initially, Oskar Lens painted abstractly with ink and varnish on paper, using minimal color. Although critics responded favorably to this work, the desire arose to paint more figuratively and with more color. He chose people as his subject, usually women in unusual situations, such as at fashion shows, in museums, or in the kitchen. Few painters would dare to use the vibrant colors that Lens displayed a predilection for in his paintings from the outset. He is not concerned with working out what he observes, but with the pleasure of painting.
