Private sellerProduct description
An antique coffee table executed in the characteristic style of André-Charles Boulle, the famous cabinetmaker of King Louis XIV. This piece embodies the opulence of the French Baroque through its complex marquetry and gilded bronze ornaments. The table is an example of the Boulle technique, where intricate patterns of brass and tortoiseshell (or an imitation thereof) are laid into a wooden base.
The construction of the table consists of a wooden frame, finished with black lacquer and detailed inlay panels. The top and sides are decorated with 'première-partie' and 'contre-partie' marquetry in shades of red, black, and gold. The table rests on elegant cabriole legs, which are accented with gilded bronze (ormolu) fittings in the form of mascarons and acanthus leaves. The furniture features a central drawer, also decorated with a bronze mask.
This piece of furniture shows a rich patina that testifies to its long history. The overall condition is consistent with its age, with signs of use contributing to the authentic and lived-in character of the object. It is a piece with a clear historical presence.
Has some missing parts in the marquetry. Some of them are present and can be reinserted during a restoration.
