This chair is the Argyle model, designed in 1897 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the tearoom in Argyle Street in Glasgow. It is a later version from Cassina's "I Maestri" collection, produced in 1973 and no longer in the range.
The chair is made of ebonized ash wood and has a high, sculptural backrest with a characteristic oval end element shape, which Mackintosh regarded as a design and symbolic feature.
The backrest is constructed from vertical panels and slender round bars, creating a striking, graphic silhouette. The seat is upholstered and covered with the original blue and black Crine fabric (horsehair fabric).
The construction is carefully crafted, with cross struts underneath the seat and a gently curved lower end at the front and back, giving the geometric design language a soft touch.
The chair bears the original Cassina branding with serial number 803 and the designer's name.
The proportions and shapes are based on original designs and measurements from the Mackintosh collection at Glasgow University.
The model was originally developed for the central tea room tables of the Argyle Street Tearoom and is the first piece of seating furniture by Mackintosh to use the characteristic upper backrest motif as an iconographic design element.
Condition: Very good, well-kept original condition with minimal signs of wear due to age. The ebonized surface is evenly preserved, the seat upholstery is firm and the cover is clean.
