Charcoal watercolor, 1956. Leenderd Spaans was born Dec. 5, 1928, in the Hague. He was a student at the rijksacademie in amsterdam from 1956 to 1961, the city where he lived and worked from 1953 until his death in 1999. Leen Spaans painted dilapidated villages, houses, stone structures, landscapes, seen from great heights. Signs left by man tried to make Spaans visible in his work. A collage of colors, symbols, used in combination with different techniques, each representing a concept. The earth, time, space; the process of decay and renewal. The essence of his work is philosophical. The grip or influence that time has on matter gives a shock of recognition. The recognition from a dream, mysterious, elusive. Spaans likes to work in relief and - with few exceptions - always incorporates metal foil into his paintings. From 1983 - 1987 Leen Spaans was chairman/artistic coordinator of the working group bkr assignments of the municipality of Amsterdam (from:shen 1969/1970, part ii, p. 373) This watercolor (title unknown) shows a dilapidated harbor.
