Antique low table in pine wood, from Central Europe, with original paint. Originates from the tradition of rural European domestic furniture of the early 20th century, where painted pine coexisted with bare-wood tops in everyday furniture. This type of low table, with a central drawer, was used in the sitting room or kitchen of the rural home to store small objects and utensils. The frame, with straight, slightly tapered legs, features a front drawer with a ceramic knob and iron escutcheon, and is reinforced by a stretcher formed from an unsquared branch of wood, left in its natural shape. The original paint, an aged white tone, shows widespread losses revealing the pine wood in the most-handled areas, while the top retains a warm tone of bare wood. In a country or eclectic-style living room or entryway, it works as a low table or console, bringing the contrast between worn paint and the natural branch stretcher.
