Product description
This is an authentic Dutch ship's trunk that carries a rich history of travel. The cabin trunk bears the name 'D.A. BUSCHKENS'. Donald Adolf Buschkens (1919-1983) was a journalist for De Locomotief; the first newspaper published in Semarang, Indonesia. Founded in 1845. De Locomotief was the largest newspaper in Central Java and developed into a mouthpiece for the ethical policy in colonial politics. The presence of original shipping labels, including one from the 'Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd' for the ship 'Indrapoera', makes this trunk a tangible piece of maritime history. The chest is made from a wooden body, finished in a distinctive green color with contrasting black bands. Metal slats, corner pieces, and rivets ensure a robust construction, designed to withstand the rigors of sea voyages. The labels directly connect the trunk to the historical liner service between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, offering a unique provenance and a fascinating story. The overall condition of the trunk is consistent with its age and intensive use.
