They are made in the Louis XV style (Louis XV or Neo-Rococo), recognizable by the gracefully curved cabriole leg ending in a stylized foot.
The style originated in the 18th century (circa 1730–1775).
The upholstery is a luxurious velvet with a floral motif.
The carving in the walnut wood is of an exceptionally high and theatrical level.
DETAILS:
Leg Construction (The corner block without screws)
The absence of visible screws in the corner block indicates traditional, artisanal carpentry. The block is secured with animal glue (such as bone glue) and wooden dowels or pins. This suggests that the chair was not made in a modern 20th-century factory, but by a skilled furniture maker who applied classic 18th-century techniques.
Interior (Webbing and jute)
The fact that purely natural materials such as jute are behind the woven webbing confirms that the chair dates from the heyday of historicism (late 19th century up to World War II). Modern filling materials such as foam rubber are completely absent here; the chair is still constructed with classic materials.
The upholstery (Luxurious velvet with floral motif)
The new photo shows a magnificent, richly carved armchair with deep red, embossed velvet (often called velours de Gênes or velvet brocade) with a classic baroque floral and pomegranate motif. The carving on the front of the seat and on the armrests is very exuberant, voluminous, and deeply carved. This type of excessive ornamentation is typical of the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo style that was enormously popular among the wealthy bourgeoisie around 1900.
Typical style characteristics: Italian Neo-Baroque
Where the cabriole leg still subtly leaned towards the refined Louis XV style, this imposing crest screams pure (Neo-)Baroque. The design is extremely three-dimensional and "maturely" carved. Here we see a succession of classic motifs:
Rocaille and shell motifs: The asymmetrical, wavy curls along the edges.
Acanthus leaves: The stylized, curling leaves that adorn the entire wooden frame and are deeply carved.
Pierced carving: At the very top, the wood is completely openwork, which at the time was a sign of very high-quality craftsmanship to prevent the solid wood from splitting during carving.
Shape of the back: The "Gondola" or "Throne"
The backrest extends into wide, outward-curling "cheeks" (wings). This type of wide, richly decorated backrest is strongly inspired by monumental 17th and 18th-century palace furniture from Italy (especially Venice and Rome).
The tufted velvet in the backrest, combined with this massive, openwork crest, makes this an absolute eye-catcher. It is a piece of furniture designed to radiate pure luxury, power, and status.
Features of the back:
Flat and sleek back: The carving on the back is completely flat and unfinished. This is typical for furniture designed to be placed flush against a wall or in a corner.
Machine saw marks: The sleek, even contours and the round holes in the openwork carving (the crest) show that the wood was roughly shaped with a mechanical band saw or jigsaw. Afterwards, the front was manually refined and detailed.
Finish with decorative nails: The upholstery on the back is neatly finished with a continuous row of metal decorative nails (tacks). This ensures a clean transition between the fabric and the woodwork.
Current dating is PROBABLY around 1950-1980.
and probably Italian from the Meda/Brianza region.
