He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano University before starting his career working for Italian design companies. He rose to fame in the 1960s working for American Airlines, for which he designed a new logo and a complete visual identity. Vignelli also worked for brands such as Knoll, IBM, Bloomingdale's, and the National Park Service, and created designs for products ranging from cutlery to furniture to watches. In 1971, Vignelli co-founded the design firm Vignelli Associates in New York with his wife, Lella Vignelli, also a designer. They worked together on numerous projects, including for furniture chain Design Within Reach and Italian train company Ferrovie dello Stato. Vignelli received numerous awards for his work, including the City of Milan Culture Award and the American Industrial Design Award, and was named a member of Madrid's Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He died in 2014 at the age of 83 following an illness. His work continues to inspire designers around the world.
