After studying cabinetmaking at the Ecole Boulle in Paris, Sornay began his career in his father's workshop in Lyon, where he worked on modernist furniture projects. He soon developed his own style, characterized by simple, geometric shapes, bright colors and the use of materials such as metal and plywood. In the 1930s, Sornay founded his own furniture company, where he experimented with new mass-production techniques to create modern, functional furniture pieces on a large scale. He was also active in developing the French standard for plywood furniture. Over the years, Sornay won numerous awards and distinctions for his innovative design work, including a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. His designs have been widely displayed in exhibitions and museums, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Today, André Sornay's furniture is considered a collector's item and is sold at art and design auctions around the world.
