After studying sculpture at the Stockholm School of Arts and Crafts, Ander began his career in the 1940s as a designer for the Swedish glass company Ystad Metall. He went on to work for other Swedish glass companies, including Upsala-Ekeby and Lindshammar. During the 1950s and 1960s, Ander collaborated with the Swedish lighting company SAAB to create innovative lamps using modern materials such as Plexiglas and metal. His creations were widely exhibited at design shows in Scandinavia and abroad. In addition to his work in glassware and lighting, Ander also designed furniture and textiles for several Swedish manufacturers, including Svenskt Tenn and Plus Linje. Gunnar Ander is considered one of the most influential Swedish designers of the post-war period, and his creations are today highly sought-after by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts.
