This antique Brownhills Bamboo Lemonade Pitcher from circa 1880 is decorated in an Asian style with a trellis of bamboo shoots and embossed flowers. The handle is shaped like a bamboo stalk. The stoneware is finished with enamel on top of a glaze, which preserves the vibrant colors.
There are two small holes in the rim, one of which is no longer completely sealed. This pitcher is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. Furthermore, the original lid is still present, which is a rarity. The pitcher is marked '1544 N' on the bottom.
Around the turn of the century, owning Asian-style tableware was a sign of status. It was a time of the Aesthetic Movement, during which people were particularly interested in Asian influences. Brownhills Pottery Co., Turnstone, Stafforshire, England, also advertised tableware and other products in this style at the time.
