This armillary is a special (table) decoration and eye-catcher. An armillary or armillary sphere is a celestial sphere with metal rings that represent the main circles of the sky. The armillary was invented by Eratosthenes in 255 BC. Usually the Earth, but later the Sun, is placed in the center of metal circles. In ancient times it was an instrument to determine time and place. Renaissance scientists liked to be depicted with an armillary, as a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. The instrument is depicted on the flag of Portugal. This instrument (brass with a mahogany base) is in the 12 inch version. Height approx. 30 cm and the largest width is approx. 19 cm. The weight is 1380 grams. See the photos for a good assessmentA few very small spots. Photos provide a faithful representation.
