Kokeshi (こけし,小芥子), are simple wooden Japanese dolls without arms or legs that have been made as toys for children for more than 150 years. Originally from the northeastern region of Japan, they are handmade of wood and have a simple trunk and head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body often has floral and/or ring designs, painted in red, black and sometimes green, purple, blue or yellow ink, and covered with a layer of wax. A characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. Since the 1950s, kokeshi makers have signed their work, usually on the bottom and sometimes on the back. This set of 5 of consists of the following vintage specimens from the 1950s to 1970s, from left to right: 1. green and yellow painting, 36 cm high, and special: the wood has a knot on the back. Text on the doll translates to: Akiu hot spring, by Takeo Shikai. 2. painted only in black, 28 cm, in a lighter type of wood. Signed. 3. largest: no less than 60 cm tall and weighing nearly 5 kg. Painting on body heavily faded, signed on bottom. 4. magnificent specimen, heavy and flawless. 31 cm. 5. Also 37 cm, has small butte on head, see photos. The signature indicates: Yu Tendo Hot Spring Hot Spring・Xiao Ming, and: In memory of the ancestors of ten years agoComes from smoke free and pet free home. Discoloration and light scratches as to be expected with this type of dolls from 50 to 70 years old.
