This model. Model 415/1401 is introduced in 1954 and shown for the first time at the 10th Milan Triennale where it was awarded a gold medal. It is a chair with an unprecedented sleek design in which the function largely determines the form. Its beautiful iron frame and bakelite armrests immediately catch the eye, the cushions filled with foam rubber were a novelty for that time. The model remains in production and popular with the public for many years, in 2023 the design still looks current and modern, which has rightly earned the chair the title of Design Icon. This copy. This copy comes from the first owners who already brought the chair into their home in the 1950s as a hypermodern piece of furniture. It was used for many years until the chair was ready for a complete restoration in 2022. At that time we took over this classic and completely restored it, the upholstery was completely renewed with Richwool from Keymer in color no. 18, a beautiful ocher yellow fabric with orange tones. View more information about the fabric at this link. The foam rubber has also been replaced by the very best material on the market, resulting in a seating comfort equal to or even better than the original. About the designer. Wim Rietveld (1924-1985), son of the well-known architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, had a technical education. He then went on to work as a constructor of large appliances. He worked, among others, for the company Servo Balans, a company that manufactured large exclusive weighing devices for the industry. From 1950, Wim Rietveld trained as a designer at the Royal Academy in The Hague. The quality of his graduation work prompted manufacturer Willem Gispen to invite him for a job at the Gispen company of the same name. At that time, the Netherlands was in the process of reconstruction and there was a shortage of materials. Wim Rietveld was employed by Gispen from 1953 to 1957 . Rietveld was good at balancing functionality and aesthetics and devising simple production techniques. His motto was: 'Good shape, solid, practical and cheap'. He preferred not to use tube for legs, but much thinner solid round steel. The advantage of this is that it visually attracts less attention and it is easier and therefore cheaper to bend. He also introduced the technique of foam rubber chair cushions and the pressing of plywood. Rietveld was a designer who spoke the technical language and was originally a structural engineer; constructor from the inside out, the elements grouped logically and adapted to the possibilities of the machine park or to the basic material that could be purchased well and cheaply from the trade. In addition to “furniture for the simple interior”, Rietveld also worked on a multitude of other products. You are more than welcome to come and have a look and try it out in our Design Center!
