Some more history:
Wim Rietveld (1924-1985), son of the famous architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, received a technical education. Starting in 1950, Wim Rietveld trained as a designer at the Royal Academy in The Hague. The quality of his graduation work prompted manufacturer Willem Gispen to invite him for a job with the Gispen company of the same name. At that time, the Netherlands was in the process of reconstruction and materials were in short supply.
Wim Rietveld was employed by Gispen from 1953 to 1957. Rietveld was good at balancing functionality and aesthetics and devising simple production techniques. His motto was, "Good form, solid, practical and inexpensive.
In 1956, A.R. Cordemeyer was appointed as a designer alongside Wim Rietveld. He joined the team to design a new cheaper desk. And was constantly improving existing designs.
The Gispen 1407 is a continuation of Rietveld's first design; the Gispen 415 / 1401 . The 1407 is slightly wider and deeper than the 1401. Thus more suitable for today's taller people.
During the period 1956-1976, Cordemeyer designed many pieces of furniture for the Gispen firm, including office furniture program AZ, as well as furniture for the residential interior of 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻
The 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻 in Amsterdam existed under this name from 1946 to 1968, then as 'Stichting Wonen' until 1988.
They went far in their views. The foundation set itself the goal:
To raise living in the Netherlands to a higher level by improving home furnishing in the broadest sense of the word, by promoting the production and distribution of furniture, upholstery, utensils, etc., which meet certain aesthetic, technical and social requirements.
An oak smoking chair is wrong; rattan furniture is right. Floral wallpaper and heavy curtains are wrong; white walls and fresh shades are right!
With such instructions, in the late 1940s, the foundation aimed to rid Dutch interiors of bad taste. "Taste is a matter of education," was the thought behind the foundation's establishment in 1946.
With model homes and in a magazine, the foundation promoted modern interiors. Over the years, 75 model homes were furnished throughout the country. With light furniture in a sleek layout, residents could get the most out of their homes at home and thus out of themselves. To save space, Goed Wonen's furniture and utensils often had multiple functions.
Within a radius of 20 km I will bring the chairs free of charge. If you live further away, we will discuss the possibilities.
Some minor signs of use on the frame and legs, see photo.
