Miriam Slaats is a versatile visual artist of international stature. Her work is authentic, intensive, strong and dynamic. The paintings are both light-hearted and profound and penetrate into the essence of things.
Miriam Slaats is a versatile visual artist of international stature. Her work is authentic, intensive, strong and dynamic. The paintings are both light-hearted and profound and penetrate into the essence of things. This layering is also representative of her own process as an artist. In 1988 she completed her Graphic and Publicity Design course at the Academy of Visual Arts in Maastricht. Her studio/atelier is located on a rustic canal in a historic city, not far from Amsterdam. There she works with drive and passion on her paintings and sculptures almost every day. Her suitcases are always on standby next to her easel, because Slaats is a cosmopolitan. She considers the whole world her homeland and makes many trips every year to paint.
Themes
Slaats communicates not only with paint, but also with words. Each of her titles is pure lyricism. Sometimes she even includes the titles within the image. Surrender, devotion, redemption, justice, mystery, love and happiness; all themes are discussed by the artist. Her paintings effortlessly appeal to imagination, dreams and desires. The works are man's search for harmony and peace with the universe.
Passionate artist
Slaats is an enthusiastic artist. You will never find her pacing around her studio, brooding on artistic ideas and waiting for the muses to arrive. Every morning Slaats puts on her white overalls, rolls up her sleeves, starts a CD with music that matches her mood at that moment and then works long, intensively and sometimes even euphorically. Her studio is a treat for the connoisseur. Order predominates and yet there are all kinds of intriguing objects scattered here and there. Her studio is bathed in the sun's rays and if the sun doesn't shine outside, it shines inside. Where the artist is near, the world seems to start dancing.
Development
Her optimistic character and structural light-heartedness are completely sincere and disarming, but only show one side of the coin. Slaats also exhibits other philosophical aspects in her work. As a result, a fascinating perspective has emerged over the years. Previous work used cheerful, bright and clear colours. Later, earthy tones such as ocher, brown and gray with accents of silver and gold were added. Her most recent work is characterized by light shades applied in various layers. We see subtle nuances and a free brushstroke that less frames the shapes in her work. The whole thing is more abstract. Slaats adds paper elements such as photos from magazines, books and newspapers. This leads to fascinating collage techniques that amaze and invite close observation.
