Jan Makkes felt a strong bond with Vincent van Gogh. He admired the work of that artist immensely. In character, he felt similarities. “Van Gogh painted the light,” says Makkes. Drama, dynamism and sensitivity radiate from his work. I always hope that people discover that in my work as well. In any case, that is what I try to convey on the canvas: light, colour, drama and dynamics. The journey Makkes made along the places where Van Gogh had worked was a kind of pilgrimage for him.
