Have you always dreamed of owning a genuine Rietveld? Then this is your chance! We're offering a rare HOPMI chair, produced under license from the Rietveld estate. It's made of chrome-plated steel tubing and features a plywood seat and backrest.
The "Rietveld HOPMI Chair" was designed in 1932 by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Originally, only two examples of this design were produced, and they were presumed lost for years. Until 2008, when Professor Lanjouw's heir delivered a bag containing steel tubing, screws, and pieces of plywood to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The individual pieces were identified at the museum as parts of the missing HOPMI chair. This Rietveld design is a key element in Rietveld's tubular steel furniture. The chair's unique feature is that the user could assemble the individual tubes into a chair using torpedo nuts.
At the initiative of architect Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten, a one-off limited edition of 400 chairs were produced in 2013, based on the original drawings in the Centraal Museum archives, under license from the Rietveld estate. 150 copies of series 1 and 250 of series 2. A beautiful piece for the enthusiast and/or collector.
This is a mounted chair, number 125/150 of series 1 from 2013. The chair is still in good, used condition with minor damage to the chrome frame – see photos.
