A gorgeous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School-style painting executed with subtle low-relief detailing, depicting a lush and lively flower garden with a distinct autumn selection of flowers.
A thatched fence adorns the lower part of the screen throughout. Above and around it a rich variety of flowering plants, including numerous chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), bush clover 萩原 (hagi), magnolia 木蓮 (mokuren), peonies 牡丹 (botan) and other seasonal blossoms. On the left side a charming small water with an auspicious pair of mandarin ducks. The flower heads, fence elements, and the ducks themselves are delicately modelled in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste), creating depth and texture against the shimmering surface. The entire scene is enveloped by dense clouds of gold leaf.
The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender blue inner band and a broad black outer band. It is encased in a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
