This particular round table is a rare example of Chinese export furniture from the mid-19th century. Made around 1850 in China for the European market, at a time when Chinoiserie was extremely popular among the European elite. The table was found near Paris and bears all the hallmarks of a rich past.
The top has a diameter of approximately 91.5 cm and rests on an impressively carved base with three lion feet, one toe of which is partially missing. The table is made of solid wood, with a richly detailed finish and a warm, lived-in patina.
Originally this was a tilt top table - intended to be folded vertically when not in use - but the tilt mechanism has been removed or fixed over the years. The top can still slide slightly horizontally on the base, but tilt is no longer possible.
Two obvious cracks are visible on the top. These have occurred because the wooden panels that make up the top have begun to "work" over time - shrink and expand under the influence of climate and age. These cracks do not disrupt the function, but rather give the piece an honest, authentic look befitting its antique condition.
The table has not been restored and is sold as is: a characterful, antique object with visible traces of its history. An attractive addition to a classic or eclectic interior, or a unique showpiece for the lover of original 19th-century export art.
