De Backer (1921-1990) was a multifaceted man: poet, prose writer, author of stage and puppetry texts for children and adults, author of radio plays and texts for radio and television, essays, aphorisms, a musical, a film, painter and art photographer.
He was actively involved in the cultural life of Ghent, as an organizer of art exhibitions and as an animator of all kinds of events for adults and for children. He was also a board member of the Boekuil Reading Club and made an extensive photographic portrait series of numerous guest speakers.
