Iconic and sublime Topo desk lamp by Joe Colombo for Stilnovo.
Italy, 1970.
Very rare model, first edition, and all chrome; this is not a reissue.
One of the visible differences: metal joints.
Reissues are made of plastic.
Long, two-part articulated arm that attaches to a desk or shelf.
This system allows it to stay within your workspace.
The arm supports a reflector that tilts up and down and rotates 360°.
Openings on the top allow the heat from the bulb to escape.
The switch is located on the back.
Excellent condition, a few minor signs of age, nothing significant (see photos).
Topo is a design object with retro charm, inspired by 1960s sports cars.
The slits on the metal lampshade are reminiscent of the air intakes on vintage vehicles, while the shape of the shade mirrors the casing that houses the classic E27 bulb—a subtle balance between functionality and aesthetics (Source: Stilnovo website).
Joe Colombo:
Joe Colombo studied painting until 1949 at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, then architecture until 1954 at the Polytechnic University of Milan.
In the early 1950s, he joined the Nuclearist movement (a nuclear painting movement) founded by Enrico Baj and Sergio D'Angelo. He completed several interior design and scenography projects during this decade.
After his father's death in 1959, he took over the family business, a position he left in 1961. His design career truly began in 1962 when he opened his own design studio in Milan. With his brother, Gianni Colombo, he created the Acrilica lamp, and then in 1963, he designed the Elda armchair.
During the 1960s, he collaborated with leading design houses such as Kartell, Zanotta, and O-Luce, and received numerous awards, including the Compasso d'Oro and the Premier International Design Award.
He died prematurely at the age of 41.
